Company History

The business operations of Monroe's Donuts and Bakery began in the family den of the Monroe's home in 1995, next door to the current business site.

At that time, Monroe Jackson was working two jobs as well operating a small bakery.  The family den may have seemed an unlikely place to purchase a donut, but they were so good, until soon, a regular clientelle emerged, who kept encouraging Monroe to pursue his dreams.

In 2003, the Monroes' home was destroyed by hurricane wind; however, the insurance funds, along with a small business loan, was used to build the current two story structure.  The lower floor was converted into the bakery, and the upper level became the Monroe's resident.

Monroe Jackson learned the art of baking while employed at Hoeffken's Bakery in Chicago, Illinois.  Raymond Hoeffken, the business owner, who was a German immigrant, gradually starting teaching Monroe the art of baking and eventually promoted Monroe as the first and only black baker in his bakery.  It was there Monroe learned to bake rolls, cakes, pies, and pastries.  Monroe recalled, "Mr. Hoeffken always sampled everything before it left the store."  Cake with too much salt was discarded.  Monroe acquired Mr. Hoeffken's distinction for quality.

When Monroe Jackson starting working at Hoeffken's Bakery at the age of fifteen, he never imagined that his dishwashing job was a stepping stone.  Like his father, Monroe Jackson Jr., started from the ground up in the bakery businesss.   Today, the two of them rise long before dawn Monday through Saturday and bake delicious pastries.

Whether you go to the drive through window or inside the store, the Monroe's will serve you fresh pastries.  Fresh is the only way their products are served.   The bakery opens at 6 p.m. and closes at 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.  Stop by!  If you are a sweet lover, odds are, you will become a regular customer of Monroe's Donuts and Bakery.
